The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
– 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

What is a stronghold?

We believe there are two types of strongholds. First, strongholds can be understood as deeply entrenched beliefs or emotional defenses that shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. Paul’s metaphor in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 reminds us that our greatest battles are not always external but internal – against distorted thoughts and unresolved wounds. Through counseling, we begin to confront our mental fortresses built from anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, or shame – beliefs we’ve strongly upheld, sometimes without even realizing it.

These might sound like, “I’m not enough,” “I’ll always be alone,” or “If anyone really knew me, they wouldn’t want me.” These are strongholds in the truest sense: internal narratives that we fiercely defend because they once protected us, even though they may now hold us back.

Paul calls us to “take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ." In counseling, our goal is to recognize and challenge these destructive beliefs, comparing them to what is true. This process allows us to dismantle unhelpful strongholds and rebuild new ones rooted in truth, resilience, and our identity in Christ. Just as our minds can build harmful defenses, they can also establish positive strongholds – constructive beliefs that guard against negative self-talk and emotional spirals. Statements like “I am chosen, “I can grow,” or “God is with me in my struggle” can become new fortifications that protect our mental and spiritual well-being. Healing involves both the tearing down of what harms and the building up of what restores, guided by therapeutic insight and the transforming truth of Christ.

I view counseling as a collaborative process where the client and counselor build a relationship of understanding and trust. Together, we work to identity current challenges, set meaningful goals for a more fulfilling life, and take intentional steps toward achieving those goals.
